T20, ODI, and Test — what kind of betting does each format offer?

Each cricket format has its own pace and character — it's worth keeping that in mind when betting.

T20

Twenty20 — the fastest format

In a 20-over game, runs move up and down very quickly. This format is the most popular for betting during BPL and T20 World Cup. Because the situation can change in an instant, live betting is especially appealing here.

ODI

One-Day Matches — a game of balance

In 50-over ODIs, mid-innings markets, top batsman, and powerplay runs create distinct opportunities. This format attracts heavy betting in IPL and ICC tournaments.

Test

Test Cricket — a test of patience

In a five-day Test, the draw is a possible outcome alongside the match winner, so there is more market variety. Series winner and innings total markets are far more relevant in Test cricket.

Tournaments popular with Bangladesh fans

For cricket fans in Bangladesh, the BPL season is the most anticipated time of year. Betting on local teams facing each other feels far more intense. IPL keeps millions of cricket fans in front of their screens every year, and each match has its own dedicated markets. Matches featuring the Bangladesh Tigers in the ICC T20 World Cup and international bilateral series naturally draw the highest attention.

For football, you can find details on international matches and leagues on the Sports Events page. The main difference between cricket and football betting is that cricket has far more over-by-over markets, while football is more associated with first goalscorer and handicap markets.

177bet BPL and International Cricket Markets

Popular betting markets in cricket

Each market has its own characteristics — some deliver results early, others keep you waiting until the last ball.

Market How it works Example
Match Winner Bet on which team will win the match. No draw in T20 or ODI. Pick Team A or Team B — the result is decided when the match ends.
Toss Winner The result comes before the match starts — which team wins the toss. If Team A wins the toss, that bet succeeds; otherwise the bet loses.
Top Batsman Which batsman from either team will score the most runs. Selecting a specific batter from Team B as the top scorer.
Total Runs (Over/Under) Whether total runs in an innings will be above or below a set number. Whether Team A's first innings will exceed 160 — picking Over means you are backing the higher score.
Multi Bet Combining multiple selections together — if all are correct, the returns are multiplied. Combining three bets (odds 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.80) gives combined odds of 3.78; a ৳100 bet returns ৳378 — but if even one is wrong, the entire bet loses.
Powerplay Runs How many runs will be scored in the first six overs. Whether Team B's powerplay runs will exceed 50 — the result comes at the very start of the innings.
Next Wicket Method How the next wicket will fall — bowled, caught, or run out. In live betting, this market updates after every ball.

Decimal, Fractional, and American — how to read odds

The same odds are written in three different formats — the value is identical, only the presentation differs.

Example 1 — Team A to win (stake ৳200)

The same value in three formats: Decimal 2.50 Fractional 3/2 American +150

If it wins: ৳500 returned (৳300 profit + your ৳200 stake). If it loses: ৳200 lost.

In decimal, multiply the stake by the odds: 200 × 2.50 = ৳500. Fractional 3/2 means ৳3 profit for every ৳2. American +150 means ৳150 profit on a ৳100 bet.

Example 2 — Team B the favourite (stake ৳200)

Favourite's value: Decimal 1.50 Fractional 1/2 American -200

A ৳200 bet returns ৳300 (৳100 profit). A negative American odds figure tells you how much you need to stake to win ৳100 — -200 means you must bet ৳200 to win ৳100.

177bet Live In-Play Betting on Cricket Matches
Live

In-play betting during a match

You can place bets even after a cricket match has started — this is in-play or live betting. Odds are recalculated after every wicket falls and after every over is completed.

Suppose Team A loses two quick wickets in the first powerplay. They may have been favourites before the match, but now their odds of winning will lengthen (meaning the market believes their chances have dropped). This is exactly the moment when new opportunities appear in the live market.

In T20, needing 60 runs off the last five overs — in a situation like this, the total runs market odds shift after every ball. This constant movement is what sets live betting apart.

  • A fast connection is important for live betting — odds change every moment.
  • When a wicket falls, run-rate pressure increases — pay close attention to the markets at that point.
  • Most T20 matches are decided in the death overs (the last four or five overs).

Some practical tips for cricket betting

Betting is for entertainment — so enjoy it with a plan.

Budget

Set a fixed budget

Decide how much you will bet before each match. Placing a larger bet to recover a loss is not a wise approach. The 177bet responsible gaming guidelines cover this in detail.

Market

Focus on one or two markets

Rather than spreading bets across many markets, focus on the ones you understand well. Match Winner and Total Runs are the easiest markets for new bettors to follow.

Format

Bet according to the format

The toss has a bigger influence in T20 and ODI (choosing to bat or field based on pitch conditions). In Test cricket, weather and pitch conditions have a major impact on odds.

Multi Bet

Be careful with multi bets

Multi bets show higher potential returns, but every selection must be correct. Combining three bets (odds 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.80 = 3.78) returns ৳378 on ৳100 — but one wrong selection loses the whole bet.

Common questions about cricket betting

Frequently asked questions about cricket betting.

Yes, markets vary by format. T20 offers the most over-by-over runs, powerplay score, and live markets. ODI has separate mid-innings markets and series winner options. Test matches include a draw option, so the Match Winner market has three outcomes (Team A, Team B, or Draw). It's best to understand the pace of each format before choosing your market.

In cricket, every ball is a new event — a wicket, a boundary, a dot ball, a wide — and the probability of winning shifts after each one. The market reflects this updated situation immediately, which is why odds change so quickly. A wicket in particular increases run-rate pressure and causes the batting team's market odds to move sharply.

Decimal 1.50 means the total return including your stake. A ৳200 bet returns ৳300 if it wins (৳100 profit + your ৳200). This is the same as 1/2 in fractional and -200 in American — all three formats express the same value, just presented differently. Decimal is the simplest to calculate — multiply your stake by the odds to get the total return.

Yes. Both BPL and IPL are T20 format tournaments, so over-by-over markets, powerplay markets, and live wicket markets are available. There are also long-term markets such as series winner and tournament top scorer, which remain open throughout the tournament and give you more time to decide.

This market gives a set number — for example, 160. You decide whether the total runs in the innings will be above that number (Over) or below it (Under). Say Team A is batting and the line is 160 — if you pick Over, your bet wins if Team A scores 161 or more and loses if they score 160 or fewer. Pitch, weather, and bowling strength all play an important role in this market.
